Drive mode selector on Ford Ranger

Towing was once a complicated procedure best left to skilled professionals with many years of experience. Today, technology promises to make towing accessible to anyone. Ford Pro Trailer Backup Assist is a feature available to all modern Ford trucks that simplifies backing up with an attached trailer or boat. Let’s discuss how it works.

How Do I Set Up Ford Pro Trailer Backup Assist?

Before using this towing feature, you first need to set it up using the kit you will have received. It’s important to note that Pro Trailer Backup Assist is designed for conventional trailers only, not fifth wheel or gooseneck type trailers. You will first want to add your trailer to the truck’s software system using the infotainment touchscreen and then hook up your trailer. You will then place the sticker that came with your guide on your trailer, following the provided instructions.

Next, you will calibrate the system, ensuring you are in an open area where you can freely drive forward and turn left and right. Follow the instructions on your touchscreen to properly calibrate the trailer. Once calibration is complete, you are now ready to use the feature. You can add up to 10 trailers or boats using the same method.

How Do I Use This Feature?

To turn on Pro Trailer Backup Assist, push the center button on the drive mode selector knob and select your connected trailer from the list on the touchscreen. You will then shift into reverse, take your hands off the steering wheel, and follow the prompts on the touchscreen, using the knob to turn the trailer. Turning the knob to the left turns the trailer to the left, with the same applying to the right.

Once your trailer is moving in the direction you want, release the knob. The system will steer your truck to keep the trailer moving straight back while you control the accelerator and brake. You may have to make small adjustments to keep your trailer moving in the desired direction.

What Other Towing Technology is Available?

Trailer Reverse Guidance is another available towing feature that assists with reversing with an attached trailer. When your truck is in reverse, press the camera button to view and select a list of available camera views, including the sides of your truck and trailer, a 180-degree view behind your truck, a 360-degree view of your truck, and the truck bed. The default mode changes views with the trailer direction.

Trailer Backup Assist is just one of several available towing technologies that Ford offers with its lineup of trucks. These technologies make towing significantly easier and safer, removing the nagging anxiety that comes with camping trips, work tasks, and boating adventures.
